Sweden
Northern Europe · Capital: Stockholm
A global leader in innovation, sustainability, and quality of life. Sweden is home to iconic brands like Spotify, IKEA, Ericsson, and Volvo, with a thriving startup ecosystem and some of the best work-life balance in the world.
Overview
Sweden punches well above its weight in innovation and entrepreneurship. Stockholm produces more billion-dollar startups per capita than any city outside Silicon Valley. The country is known for its flat organizational structures, generous parental leave (480 days shared between parents), and strong social safety net.
English proficiency is exceptionally high — over 90% of Swedes speak English fluently, making it easy to work and live without Swedish. However, learning Swedish is beneficial for social integration and is required for citizenship.

Housing
Sweden's housing market is unique. The primary rental market (förstahandskontrakt) has long queues — in Stockholm, average wait times through the municipal housing queue (Bostadsförmedlingen) are 9–12 years. Most newcomers use the secondary market.
- Förstahandskontrakt: First-hand contracts are rent-controlled and highly sought after. Register with the housing queue as soon as possible.
- Andrahandskontrakt: Second-hand (subletting) contracts are much easier to find and are the realistic option for newcomers.
- Deposit: Typically 1–3 months' rent.
- Personnummer: Your Swedish personal identity number — essential for almost everything (bank accounts, mobile plans, healthcare).

Healthcare
Sweden has a publicly funded healthcare system with very low out-of-pocket costs. Healthcare is managed at the regional level.
- GP visit cost: SEK 200–350 per visit.
- Annual cap: After spending SEK 1,300 on outpatient care in a 12-month period, further visits are free (högkostnadsskydd).
- Prescription cap: Maximum SEK 2,850/year out-of-pocket for prescription medicines.
- Registration: Register at your local vĂĄrdcentral (health center) using your personnummer.
- Dental: Subsidized for ages 24 and under. Adults receive an annual dental allowance (tandvårdsbidrag) of SEK 300–600.
Banking & Finance
Sweden is nearly cashless — almost all transactions are done by card or the mobile payment app Swish. You'll need a personnummer to open most bank accounts.

Tax System
Sweden has some of the highest taxes in the world, but these fund comprehensive social services. The tax system is straightforward:
| Component | Rate |
|---|---|
| Municipal tax (kommunalskatt) | ~30–35% (varies by municipality; average ~32%) |
| State tax (statlig skatt) | 20% on income above SEK 613,900/year |
| Employer contributions | 31.42% of gross salary (paid by employer on top of salary) |
For most employees, the effective income tax rate is 30–35%. High earners (above SEK 613,900) pay an additional 20% state tax on the portion above the threshold.
