Germany is the most popular destination for international tech workers in Europe. It has Europe's largest economy, a thriving startup scene (particularly in Berlin), strong worker protections, generous vacation (25–30 days), and one of the best work-permit systems in the world — the EU Blue Card.

This guide walks you through the entire process: from understanding salary expectations and finding jobs, to applying, interviewing, getting your visa, and settling in. Every step includes specific resources, links, and practical advice.

1. Before Your Job Search

Before you start sending applications, take time to understand the German labour market, salary levels, and whether you are eligible to work.

Do you have permission to work?

  • EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: You can work in Germany without any visa or permit. Just show up and start working
  • Non-EU citizens: You need a work visa. The most common path for tech professionals is the EU Blue Card. Your employer handles most of the paperwork, but you need a qualifying job offer first
  • Already in Germany on another visa? Check if your current visa allows employment, or if you can switch to a work visa from within Germany

Salary expectations

For tech roles: usually no. Most startups and international companies in Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg operate in English. However:

Your CV (Lebenslauf)

For international/startup roles, a standard English CV is fine. For traditional German companies, a German-format CV (Lebenslauf) works better:

  • Photo: Include a professional headshot (still standard practice in Germany, despite anti-discrimination debates)
  • Personal details: Date of birth, nationality, and city of residence
  • Structure: Reverse-chronological. No gaps — explain periods of travel, study, or parental leave
  • Length: 2–3 pages. Academic qualifications and certifications are valued
  • Attachments: Copies of degrees, employment references (Arbeitszeugnisse), and relevant certifications

Your cover letter (Anschreiben)

German employers — especially traditional ones — expect a cover letter. For startups applying through English-language job boards, a cover letter is often optional but always helps if done well.

  • Address it to a specific person (check LinkedIn or the company website)
  • Explain why you want to work at this specific company in this specific city
  • Address the visa question directly: "I hold a Master's degree in Computer Science and qualify for the EU Blue Card"

4. The Interview Process

German tech interviews typically follow this structure, though it varies by company:

Typical interview stages

  1. Recruiter screen (30 min): Salary expectations, visa status, availability, motivation. Be prepared to state your salary expectations as a gross annual figure. Recruiters in Germany ask about this early
  2. Technical interview / coding challenge (1–2 hours): Live coding, system design, or take-home assignment. Standards are similar to US tech interviews, but German companies tend to be less LeetCode-heavy than FAANG
  3. Team/cultural fit interview (1 hour): Meeting the team, discussing working style, collaboration. German work culture values reliability, directness, and thoroughness
  4. Final interview with hiring manager or CTO (30–60 min): Strategic questions, salary negotiation, start date discussion

Tip: German interview processes tend to be slower than US ones. Expect 3–6 weeks from first contact to offer. Don't panic if you don't hear back immediately — follow up politely after 1–2 weeks if you haven't received a response.

What to expect as a remote candidate

  • Most initial rounds will be over video call (Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams)
  • Some companies will fly you out for a final on-site interview — this is a good sign and usually covers expenses

5. The Job Offer

Congratulations — you got an offer. Before you sign, here is what to look out for in a German job contract.

Key contract terms to check

  • Gross salary (Bruttogehalt): This is the headline number. Use Brutto Netto Rechner to calculate your net pay
  • Probation period (Probezeit): Typically 6 months. During this period, either party can terminate with 2 weeks' notice. After probation, notice periods are usually 3 months
  • Vacation days (Urlaubstage): The legal minimum is 20 days (based on a 5-day work week), but most tech companies offer 26–30 days
  • Working hours: Standard is 40 hours/week. Some companies offer 38 or even 36 hours
  • Notice period (Kündigungsfrist): Standard is 3 months after probation. Some contracts have 6-month notice periods — negotiate this down if you can
  • Non-compete clause: If present, the employer must compensate you for the non-compete period. These are less common in Germany than in the US
  • Bonus and equity: Stock options are less common in Germany than in the US. If offered, understand the tax implications — Germany taxes stock option gains as income
  • Relocation package: Many companies offer relocation support — temporary housing, flight costs, shipping, and help with bureaucracy. Ask for this if not offered

Salary negotiation

  • Always negotiate. German employers expect it, and most have room to move 5–15% above the initial offer

Note on EU Blue Card salary thresholds: Make sure your salary meets the EU Blue Card threshold: €45,300/year (or €41,042 for shortage occupations like IT). If your offer is below this, discuss with your employer — they may need to adjust the salary for your visa to be approved.

6. Get Your Visa

Once you have a signed job contract, you can apply for your work visa. Here are the main pathways for tech professionals.

EU Blue Card (most common for tech workers)

  • Requirements: University degree (recognised in Germany) + job contract with salary ≥ €45,300 (or €41,042 for shortage occupations)
  • Duration: Up to 4 years, renewable
  • Permanent residency: After 21 months (with B1 German) or 27 months (with A1 German)
  • Family: Spouse can work immediately without a separate permit
  • Check degree recognition: anabin database — verify that your university is recognised in Germany

IT Specialist Visa (no degree required)

  • Requirements: 3+ years of professional IT experience + salary ≥ ~€51,000/year
  • No degree needed: Professional experience substitutes for formal qualifications
  • Perfect for: Self-taught developers, bootcamp graduates, and experienced professionals without a university degree

Skilled Worker Visa (Fachkräftevisum)

  • Requirements: Recognised qualification + related job offer
  • No salary threshold: Unlike the Blue Card, there is no minimum salary requirement
  • For: Workers whose salary doesn't meet the Blue Card threshold, or who have vocational rather than university qualifications

The visa application process

  1. From outside Germany: Apply at the German embassy or consulate in your country. Book your appointment early — wait times can be 4–8 weeks
  2. From inside Germany: If you're already in Germany on a valid visa (student visa, job seeker visa), you can convert to a work visa at your local Ausländerbehörde (foreigners' authority)
  3. Documents typically needed: Signed job contract, university degree (with official translation and apostille), passport, passport photos, proof of health insurance, completed visa application form

Warning: Visa processing times vary significantly. In some countries, getting a German embassy appointment can take months. Start the process as soon as you have a signed contract. Your employer's HR department or a relocation agency can help expedite things. Ask your employer if they use an immigration lawyer — most established companies do.

7. Start Working — What to Do in Your First Weeks

You've arrived in Germany with your visa and your job contract. Here is what you need to do before (or during) your first days at work.

Essential bureaucracy

  1. Register your address (Anmeldung): You must register at your local Bürgeramt (citizens' office) within 14 days of moving in. You need a signed lease and a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation). This is required for nearly everything else — bank accounts, tax ID, health insurance.   5. Get your social security number: Your health insurance provider generates this. Your employer needs it for payroll. Usually handled within the first days of employment

8. Settle In

Beyond the bureaucracy, here is what to think about when settling into life in Germany.

Finding an apartment

Housing is the hardest part of moving to Germany, especially in Berlin and Munich. Start your search early and be prepared to act fast.
